Meta tags are invisible code that shapes how your site appears in search results and social feeds. Learn which ones matter and how to implement them correctly.

What Meta Tags Actually Do

Meta tags live in the head section of your HTML and provide structured information about a web page to browsers, search engines, and social platforms. They do not appear on the page itself, but they heavily influence how that page is represented in search results, social cards, and browser tabs.

The title tag determines the clickable headline in search results and the browser tab label. The meta description provides the snippet beneath the title in search results. Open Graph tags control how your page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Twitter Cards do the same for Twitter and X.

Writing Effective Titles and Descriptions

Your title tag should be under 60 characters to avoid truncation in search results. Place your primary keyword near the beginning, but write for humans first. A title like Buy Running Shoes — Free Shipping | SportStore is better than Running Shoes, Best Running Shoes, Cheap Running Shoes.

Meta descriptions should be 150 to 160 characters. Treat them as ad copy — include a value proposition, a relevant keyword, and a subtle call to action. While descriptions do not directly affect rankings, they significantly influence click-through rates.

Social Media Optimization

Open Graph tags ensure your content looks professional when shared. At minimum, include og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. The image should be 1200x630 pixels for optimal display on high-resolution screens.

Without these tags, social platforms will guess which image and text to display, often choosing poorly cropped images or irrelevant body text. Proper Open Graph implementation is the difference between a polished, click-worthy share and a broken-looking link.
